How to Use Product Add-Ons with WooCommerce
As you can see, there are many good reasons to enable products at your online store.
But how do you go about doing so?
Well, if you’re using WooCommerce for your store or you plan to build your store with this very popular eCommerce add-on, then the process is very straightforward.
However, you will need to purchase a WooCommerce extension to follow the steps in this guide. The good news is the add-on only costs $49/per year, and if you set it up correctly, you should be able to make that money back in no time thanks to increased store revenue.
The WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Extension
The recommended method for enabling product add-ons at your WooCommerce store is to use the Product Add-Ons extension by WooCommerce.
Using this extension makes the entire process very straightforward. Also, as it’s been created by the WooCommerce team, it should slot seamlessly into your eCommerce store configuration.
You can view the full details of the add-on on its product page. You can even request a demo store with the add-on enabled to experience it for yourself for 30 days.

How to Install the WooCommerce Product Add-Ons Extension
As mentioned, you will need a WooCommerce store to use this add-on. If you don’t yet have one, you can set one up yourself or hire a WooCommerce store builder.
Once you’ve purchased and downloaded the Product Add-Ons extension, you’ll need to upload it to your WordPress site.
To do so, log in to your WordPress dashboard admin area. Then click on the Plugins → Add New sidebar menu item.
From the Add Plugins screen, click on the Upload Plugin button.
Next, click on the Choose file button. Then locate the Product Add-Ons extension file you downloaded when you bought it. Then click on the Install Now button.
On the next screen, click on the Activate Plugin to complete the installation.
Creating a WooCommerce Product Add-on
When creating product add-ons with this extension, you can either create an add-on that can be added to multiple products at your store or create an add-on for a specific product at your store.
If you create an add-on that can be applied to multiple products at your store, you can control which products it can be added to by using product categories.
Creating an Add-on for Multiple Products
To create a product that can be applied or made available to multiple products at your store, click on either the Create add-ons button that’s displayed after installation or click on the Products → Add-on sidebar menu item. Both options take you to the same place: the Add-Ons management screen.
Once you’ve reached the Add-Ons screen, click the Create New button to start.
Now you can enter the details of the add-on. The main options are giving it a name, setting the priority, and which products the add-on can be added to.
The name is for your reference only and will not be displayed to customers. The priority controls the order the add-ons will be displayed if multiple add-ons are available for the same product.
By default, an add-on is available to all products. However, you can change that by entering a product category in the Product Categories field. If you don’t enter anything here, the add-on won’t be available at all.
Now, you can add the fields to your add-on. These fields let customers add information about the add-on they’d like to order.
For example, if you want to let customers choose how many instances of the add-on they’d like to add to their order, you could add a Quantity field.
Alternatively, if you’d like the customer to add some text to the description, perhaps for a custom message add-on that can be added to a product, you could choose the Short or Long Text types.
You can also add a description to the field so the user knows what to do. You can add a price, too, and then define how much the add-on will cost. Another useful option is the file upload field that lets customers submit a file, such as a logo they’d like printed on a t-shirt.
You can also use the Heading field to add descriptive text to the add-on area on the product page. Doing so can be helpful for customers as it will give them an idea of what the add-on options refer to.
Once you’ve entered all of the details for your add-on, click on the Publish button.
To see the add-on, go to the front end of your store. Then view a product from the category that you created the add-on for. The add-on should be listed as an option for that product.
If you need to change the add-on, you can go back to the WordPress dashboard. Then navigate to the Add-Ons area by clicking on the Products → Add-ons sidebar menu item.
From there, you can click on the Edit button for the add-on you want to modify.
Creating an Add-on for a Single Product
You can also create add-ons for a single product rather than creating add-ons that can be made available to multiple products.
If you want to create an add-on on a per-product basis, you’ll need to edit an existing product at your store.
To do so, navigate to the All Products page in your WordPress dashboard by clicking on the Products → All Products sidebar menu item.
You can then edit the product you’d like to create an add-on for by clicking on the Edit button.
From the Edit product screen, scroll down to the Product data panel and click on the Add-on sidebar menu item.
Now you can add fields to the add-on in the same way you did before in the previous step when creating add-ons for multiple products.
Disable Add-ons for a Particular Product
You also get the option of not showing add-ons that would otherwise be displayed for a product.
For example, if you create a global add-on that is available for all products in a certain category, but you would like to disable that add-on for a specific product, you can check the Exclude add-ons box from the Edit Product screen.
When you’ve finished creating the add-ons, you can publish them by clicking on the Update button in the top right corner of the screen.
Adding product add-ons to your store can be an effective way to sell more items, increase average order value, and give your customers the ability to customize your products. It’s another great way to enhance your eCommerce store.
Using the Product Add-Ons extension for WooCommerce makes the whole process very straightforward. Not only that, but this extension is extremely easy to use. At $49/year, it’s a relatively cheap addition to any WooCommerce store and should pay for itself in no time.
